An art form from beyond antiquity and preceeding pottery making,
basket weaving continues among contemporary Hopi women of Second
and Third Mesas. In our Gallery at Keams Canyon, we have a wide
variety of baskets and plaques crafted in traditional and innovative
designs, all woven from natural desert fibres. Decorative as
accent pieces, these baskets and plaques serve a useful purpose
in Hopi life, for they often hold ceremonial ground corn and
corn pollen during sacred Hopi rituals. Many have creative representations
of Hopi kachinas, while many other designs represent ceremonial
symbols.
